Td5 EGR valve sticking, rough idle and smoke
Annoying rather than dangerous.
Symptoms
Lumpy idle, black smoke, hesitation and a sooty intake manifold.
Likely cause
The exhaust gas recirculation valve gets clogged with carbon and sticks partly open.
Suggested fixes
Listed roughly in the order most owners try them.

Clean the EGR valve and intake
Remove the valve and clean off the carbon. Clean the intake manifold at the same time, as the deposits build up there too.
