Td5 cuts out when hot and restarts when cool

Will get worse if left.

Symptoms

Engine stops without warning, usually when warm, then restarts after cooling down. Rev counter may drop to zero just before it stops.

Likely cause

A failing crankshaft position sensor or a damaged sensor wire near the back of the engine.

Suggested fixes

Listed roughly in the order most owners try them.

  1. 1

    Replace the crankshaft position sensor

The sensor sits on the back of the block by the flywheel housing. Use a quality branded sensor, as cheap ones are a common cause of repeat failure.

    Moderate DIY
    Cost:
£ (Under about £50 in parts)
  2. 2

    Check the sensor wiring

Inspect the lead for chafing against the block and oil contamination at the plug. Repair any damaged wiring.

    Easy DIY
    Cost:
£ (Under about £50 in parts)
  3. 3

    Read fault codes

A Td5-capable diagnostic tool will usually log a crank sensor fault, which confirms the cause before you buy parts.
