Series petrol engine dies or starves of fuel (mechanical pump)

Will get worse if left.

Symptoms

Engine runs then dies, cranks but will not fire, or loses power on hills. Carburettor float bowl empty.

Likely cause

A split diaphragm or worn valves in the mechanical fuel pump, or a blocked sediment bowl.

Suggested fixes

Listed roughly in the order most owners try them.

  1. 1

Fit a pump repair kit or new pump

Rebuild kits include a modern ethanol-resistant diaphragm. A split diaphragm can also let petrol into the sump, so check the oil.
